The effect of antibiotics in the intestinal microflora in the animals

When giving antimicrobials to animals an immediate increase in the amount of excretion of resistant bacteria is seen. This is a general rule. It is evident that the usage of antimicrobials in animals is the main driver for the selection for resistance, which is not the same as the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance. Even in wildlife, without any contact with antimicrobials, there is a certain level of resistance. The usage of antimicrobials is certainly responsible for the increase in the prevalence of resistance genes and specific antimicrobials select for more specific types of resistance.

In a very modern, high performing layer farm in Belgium, a CLOSTAT trial started from the moment the pullets were transferred into the laying farm until 61 weeks of age.
