Probiotics in the poultry industry?

Phasing out antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) from poultry diets in Europe and recent moves toward reduction or removal of these compounds in other parts of the world including North America has put tremendous pressure on the poultry industry to look for viable alternatives.

Supplementing poultry diets with probiotics has been one of approaches available to the industry. There are so many published studies over the past 10-15 years which have investigated different aspects of probiotics applications in poultry diets.

I. Where does the industry go with probiotics as an alternative for antibiotics?

II. Is probiotics supplementation cost-effective?

III. How does composition (i.e. bacterial species) of probiotics affect their efficacy?

IV. What are your practical experiences of probiotics use?

As per result of my studies on the utilization of probiotics both in poultry and swine, I was able to come up with the result proving that probiotics when used in the ration really enhanced the growth and yield of animals used and it was proven to be a cost effective when producing a drug-free animals.
