The Future of Poultry Science?

I had the opportunity to attend the 97th annual meeting of Poultry Science Association (PSA) held 20-23 July in Niagara Falls, Canada. For this blog, I’d like to talk briefly about a session which was about the “Future of Poultry Science”. This issue was discussed from different perspectives including research, student, and university administration.

As we all know, there has been considerable expansion in the poultry industry and poultry education/research centres have made outstanding contributions to this phenomenal growth. Despite the advancements in the poultry industry, the number of active poultry science departments has declined dramatically over these years. It is argued that one of the reasons for this relates to how industry and poultry research centres have been dealing with each other over the years.

It seems that poultry research centres have not been moving at the pace that the poultry industry has been moving. The poultry industry has been directly benefiting from the data being generated at research centres and efficient interactions between these two can make excellent opportunities for them to continually understand and address their short- and long-term concerns. How connected are poultry research centres and the industry today? In my opinion, the connection level is not as it should be.

Enhancement of the relationship between research centres and the poultry industry should always be one of our main concerns. There is a continuous need to disseminate the knowledge generated by poultry research centres. There is also a constant need for support of poultry research by the industry. It is becoming quite difficult to continue conducting research projects without obtaining support from the industry. The poultry industry and research centres will remain as two major but mutually dependent players in the battle field for the future of poultry science.

Notwithstanding the huge expansion and development in poultry industry, I see no justification for allocating special colledge for poultry science .Had our graduates had special colleges for poultry science , they would have been deprived of the knowledge of other branches of animal science which assumed to be an addition to poultry and not a minus points .Have a glance to the highly reputable international laboratories ,institutes dedicated for long for poulty science around the world .Poulty science is on the right track .

It is very true in India.The Veterinary council of India( a statutory body ) has reduced the importance of Poultry science in the under graduate curriculum in all the State agricultural universities. Poultry science departments have been merged with animal sciences department and the number of credits has also been reduced to four. The under graduates have limited exposure in poultry science and are not found suitable for employment in the industry.

Happens the same thing in Iran. We have many poultry products but there isnot any poultry science departmet in our universities and we have Animal Science Deparments.we should conterbute to poultry science better than this situation. nafzali@birjand.ac.ir

Yes with the decreasing number of breeding companies worldwide availability of funds is main constraint, so called research in developing countries is of no use,development poultry has reached to its highest level comparing wiyk other livestock industry,further research is very painstaking and money oriented, companies which are doing it are solely for commercial purpose, there is need to disperse the knowldge already acquired for the benefit of the people so more and more farmers can improve their working

Yes world poultry industry is growing up and poultry science have expanded to include many other sciences, so it is neccessary to encourage universities to open new poultry science departments to get graduated people have enough information in poultry science are capable working then in most chains of poultry industry

YES, this happens in the USA, but not in some parts of the world. Why,I do not know, but right here in Brasil, the Universities stil forming excelent profissionals in the area of Poultry. The industries are employing every graduate in poultry correlate-areas. I do not know what will happens a decade from today, but right now, are a great demmands for poultry specialist e/or majors. Happens the same thing in Argentina. We are producing so much more poultry products but there is only one university that has a "especialization" carreer in poultry production. Many research center are focusing on soya and meat, which is ok in Argentin, but total neglect the poutlry industry. yhuberman@balcarce.inta.gov.ar
