DDGS in the poultry industry? 28 Aug 2008

Increasing ethanol production has resulted in creation of substantial amount of DDGS. Experimental studies have shown that DDGS can be used as a feed ingredient in broilers, laying hens, and turkeys' diets especially if it is produced at the modern ethanol production sites.
There were a large number of presentations on DDGS-related issues in the 97th annual meeting of Poultry Science Association (PSA) in July 2008. 
Dried distiller's grains with solubles (DDGS) is a by-product of the ethanol industry in which cereal grains (mainly corn and wheat) undergoes a fermentation process. Increasing ethanol production has resulted in creation of substantial amount of DDGS. Experimental studies have shown that DDGS can be used as a feed ingredient in broilers, laying hens, and turkeys' diets especially if it is produced at the modern ethanol production sites.
Variation in nutrient composition and also availability of these nutrients to the birds are among the factors which may limit use of DDGSs in poultry diets.
I - Do you have any experience of adding DDGS into commercial poultry diets?
II - If so, what is the inclusion rate that works for your flock(s)?
III - Can DDGS be considered as an alternative feed ingredient to help the industry to cope with rising cost of feed?

using ddgs in rate of 10-15% in poultry diet with enzymes are usefull ,but ddgs is varie in content of ingredient ,we should consider this point and analyze it before utilization.

3.not sure,but will it be digestible in the poultry"s GIT. It will be great if it can be an alternative to high cost of maize and wheat.

ddgs is definitely alternante one.but it is a byproduct and also it will increase feed cost because when we add DDGS we have to add with enzyme.we have to consider about this point.

ddgs specs varies from time to time in chemical composition&using it in poultry feed should depend on its contents of digestible nutrients also the price so i think feed formulation by the computer will be very useful.

If we use DDGS as a poultry feed ingredient then feed cast decrease and increase feed value and no harmful affect for human beings that is good for poultry industry.

We have run feeding trials in broiler chickens in our floor pen stations, using a very good quality corn DDGS sourced from Eastern Canada (Quebec). DDGS were included at 15% from the starter to the finisher feeds, CP and AA calculated on a digestible basis (Evonik-Degussa tables). The performance was identical to the control diets, 35 days Ross 308 mixed sexes, BW 2.25 and FC 1.65.
It is also showing that not all enzymes are useful in such diets.

we are working on its substitution for maize in rabbits.I will keep you posted on result by the end of the work.

DDGS needs to be used very carefully considering consistency of supply soure, once a supply is determined acceptable in the formulation, stick to the supply source and do not deviate from it, unless another source is identified and fresh sampling done, tested and approved again. Formation of supply chain relationships is essential to DDGS consistency. Buyers get tempted with price and get hurt in the process.
