Causes of Poult enteritis mortality syndrome (PEMS)
Young turkeys are susceptible to this acute and highly contagious disease. This is an unclassified virus (possibly a Reoviridae).
Mode of transmission
Spread of faecal-oral route.
Special note
Birds are severely immunosuppressed.
Effects of Poult enteritis mortality syndrome (PEMS)
(There is a 1.7 day incubation period). Depression, sudden death and morbidity and mortality at 100% to 50% can occur. Dehydration, diarrhea and Stunting.
Post mortem lesions
Lesions include enteritis and peritonitis.
Diagnosis of Poult enteritis mortality syndrome (PEMS)
Clinical signs and gross lesions in the intestine of young turkeys are characteristic. Isolation of the virus from the liver in the yolk sac of eggs embryonating is helpful and reinoculate day-old pooling is done to reproduce the disease.
Treatment & Control of Poult enteritis mortality syndrome (PEMS)
Prevention
Biosecurity is important and depopulate infected flocks for two consecutive growing cycles.
Treatment
None.
