The poultry industry has undergone many changes in the past twenty years. The alterations in egg production and trade have not been as dramatic as those in meat.

World Poultry's annual overview of International Egg Costings again provides surprising developments in egg prices and feed costs. The existence of extremes continues to surprise, especially in a world where the term "free trade" is used so freely.

Egg packing stations have grown larger and larger, making use of big machines that can automatically collect, grade and pack huge numbers of eggs. Up-scaling used to be the answer to increase efficiency, but today more attention is given to product flow and logistics.

The world egg production is increasing year on year, but there are huge differences between regions. That can be concluded from the 2005 IEC Production and Marketing Conference. Some countries have seen a decrease whereas others are experiencing major expansions in placements.

Despite the ongoing problem of avian influenza, international egg production continues to grow year-on-year. A detailed look at the costs involved reveal in which countries producers can expect to make the most profit.
