Over the last fifteen years the Turkish poultry industry has experienced various crisis. Some were caused by overproduction, but most were due to national economic depression. The result was a reduction in the number of players in the poultry industry. Those who remained – like Beybi – became stronger.

The poultry industry in Jordan has expanded remarkably in recent years. Total investments in this sector are estimated at US$430 million at both the private and public levels. This has led to further improvement of related industries such as feed technology, veterinary manufacturing, and processing techniques.

Despite several economic setbacks Turkey’s broiler industry has gained marked improvements since 1985. The same cannot be said for the egg and turkey sector although there are challenges for future growth.

Oil and agriculture do not mix. In looking at the challenges facing Iraq, many problems have been caused by the country's reliance on petroleum, not agriculture. Similar neglect can be seen in Nigeria, Mexico, Indonesia and Cameroon. Let's hope that the new Iraqi administration will strive to change this over-reliance where 95% of Iraq's foreign exhange comes from petroleum.

Poultry products are a major part of the staple foods in the Middle East. Over the years the production of poultry meat and eggs has increased and reached a point of slower growth. Imports are stabilising but change in terms of country of origin.

The Turkish financial crises, along with other factors, have led to fluctuations in the Turkish poultry industry over the past decade. Turkey hopes to stabilise the industry by encouraging domestic consumption and gaining a competitive edge in the export market.
