Poultry production in Africa is developing on a limited scale. Yet, some progress is being made towards market orientated production. Producers and suppliers met at the Aviana Africa show which was held from October 19-21, 2011 in Ghana’s capital Accra. Photo review of a very African style event.

Venue for the Aviana show was the lobby of the National Theatre in Accra
Upon arrival, visitors to Aviana could register at a small entrance booth
A typical African Style drum band welcomed the audience to the show
Currently poultry farming in West Africa is not a high-tech industry, the products on display reflected this situation
Among local suppliers, also a number of foreign companies participated in Aviana, such as Kepro from The Netherlands
Represented by its secretary Ms. Acheampong, the Ghana branch is an active member of the WPSA, exhibiting at Aviana
Organiser Inderjit Singh: “Aviana shows are small, thus targeting poultry producers in a small region like in Ghana and surrounding countries”
Currently, the layer market in Ghana is stronger than the broiler market. As a result, only layer breeders such as Lohmann Tierzucht participated in the show, even with live chicks
A team of young girls were promoting the next edition of Aviana, which will take place from April 19-21 in Lusaka, Zambia
Suppliers of simple feeding equipment from India seem to target the market in West Africa
By far the biggest egg producer in Ghana is Akate farms. They are also a supplier of day old chicks and as such they were exhibiting at Aviana
Apart from the egg business, Akate also moved into the roasted chicken business, be it to a small extent
Akate imported a couple of mobile grill devices from Europe, enabling them to quickly install a roasted chicken booth wherever possible
Some exhibitors came from far away, such as feed concentrate supplier Biofarma from Argentina
Although the layer business in Ghana is still very much based on floor systems, also cage suppliers such as Salmet are offering their products and services in this market
A major supplier of day old chicks, veterinary products and equipment is the Frankatson company. They seem to be the 'farmers friend'
When the show is over and passengers are leaving the showground premises, it's good advice to drive safely. The Accra traffic is unpredictable...
