AviHome receives USDA grant for poultry flooring

//30 Nov 2011
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has awarded AviHome, LLC a cost share grant to demonstrate to the poultry industry and key opinion leaders the environmental and economic benefits of the innovative AviHome Flooring System (AFS).

The USDA NRCS Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG) Program will contribute 50% of the costs for the project and will run for a total of three years with the cooperation of the University of Georgia (UGA), Perdue Farms, and Fieldale Farms.

“These grants will help some of America’s top agricultural and conservation institutions, foundations and businesses develop unique approaches to enhancing and protecting natural resources on agricultural land. Their creativity and problem-solving will benefit conservation-minded farmers and ranchers, and everyone who relies upon our nation’s natural resources for food and fiber.” says NRCS Chief, Dave White.

After several years of research and development, data is indicating that the AFS can reduce ammonia in poultry houses to near zero levels and performance of the birds can be significantly improved. “An environmental technology that can provide substantial Return on Green Investment (ROGI) is exactly what the poultry industry needs in these challenging times and with this grant we look forward to demonstrating that on a commercial platform with validation by a university with an established reputation for bringing applied innovation to the poultry industry.” says Rafael Correa, Managing Director of AviHome.

Chief White also stated “The USDA is committed to developing effective, voluntary approaches to ensure the long-term health of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. We know that managing animal waste is one of big challenges faced by producers in the Bay Watershed. USDA also is committed to supporting and expanding the use of emerging conservation technologies, such as those for manure management.”
