Brasil Foods raw chicken sales suspended by Brazil Agriculture Ministry

//06 Aug 2010
Brasil Foods (BRF), one of the world’s largest poultry exporters, had its chicken sales suspended by Brazil’s government after excess water was found in the meat.
Brasil Foods’ chicken sales were suspended as of Aug. 2, the Agriculture Ministry said in a statement on its website. BRF said in a statement that it will appeal the suspension. It also said the restriction has “no legal basis” and that it questions the government’s scientific criteria for the assessment.

Chicken accounted for about a quarter of the company’s revenue from raw meat sales in Brazil in the first quarter.
The restrictions are expected to end in about a week, according to the animal inspection department at the Agriculture Ministry. They said that BRF didn’t break any laws and is revising the processes that led to the suspension of its chicken sales.

The Agriculture Ministry also suspended sales of raw chicken by Rigor Alimentos Ltda. and Cooperativa Agroindustrial Consolata, according to the statement. Copacol, as the cooperative is known, said in a statement that it didn’t interrupt sales or exports of chicken and denied the Agriculture Ministry found irregular amounts of water in its products.
