Canada reaches bird flu-free status

//26 Jun 2009
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Canada is now officially free of bird flu, which hit farms in British Columbia earlier this year.

The agency says under animal health guidelines set by the World Health Organization, Canada was regained its "disease-free status", reports CFRB.

Earlier this year, tens of thousands of poultry were culled in British Columbia's Fraser Valley as officials tried to contain the latest outbreak of the low-pathogenicity virus.

There have been at least four avian flu outbreaks on Canadian farms since 2004 - 3 of them in the Fraser Valley, east of Vancouver.
