Egypt: 71st case of bird flu

A 3-year-old boy in Egypt has contracted the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus. This is reported to be the 71st case of bird flu in the country.

A spokesman for the Health Ministry said the boy from Mahalla in the Nile Delta north of Cairo showed symptoms including a high temperature after coming into contact with domestic poultry. He was in a stable condition in hospital and being treated with Tamiflu.

A total of 23 Egyptians have died after contracting the avian influenza virus, most after contact with infected domestic birds in a country.
