US company's massive meat and poultry recall
// 07 May 2008
A New York meat firm has voluntarily recalled approx. 286,320 pounds of
fresh and frozen meat and poultry products due to possible Lysteria
contamination, said the USDA's FSIS.
It has been reported that the recall stretches across so many products, on
a nationwide scale, that it is being called one of the biggest meat recalls in
history.
The problem was discovered through microbiological sampling by FSIS and the
Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. FSIS has received no
reports of illnesses associated with consumption of products subject to this
recall.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause
listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease.
