Kabir Chicks founder Zvi Katz passes away

//11 Jan 2012
Zvi Katz, founder and president of Kabir Chicks Ltd. passed away on January 1st, 2012, at the age of 84. Katz had a full creative life, and retired from the Israeli company about a decade ago due to health problems. His son, Josef, who worked with his father almost 30 years, took over the company in 2000.

Katz dedicated himself to poultry breeding. During 55 years of breeding work he saw his mission in achieving progress and profitability in industrial production while preserving and improving the bird's natural health and quality traits. His motto was keeping the delicate balance between economic traits and beneficial natural traits, in order to enable maximum expression and yield of the bird's genetic potential. Katz has realized his vision by developing and using unique low-cost breeding methods.

Some of Katz's most remarkable breeding breakthroughs were quantitative egg production in breeder females together with outstanding fertility and activity of the broiler breeder males, traits which, according to the conventional breeding concept, are negatively correlated. Already in the early 60's Katz understood the need for separate growing of broilers due to the different dietary requirements of male and female and then developed the colour feather sex.

In the beginning of the 60's Katz established the first poultry integration in Israel - from breeder to the consumer. In the following decade he concentrated his breeding and production efforts in the international market.

Katz has won international recognition for his poultry breeding achievements in health and quality as well as meat taste and low fat traits. His highly resistant broiler breeder lines have been well known in over 35 countries worldwide.

Very sorry to have come to know the sad demise of Dr.Zvi Katz, founder breeder of Kabir Chicks, through your columns. May his Soul Rest in Peace (RIP) in heaven. His fundamental contribution to production of economically coloured chicken for the welfare of small and medium scale poultry farmers has no suitable parallel.
It will be benefitting to the poultry community and befitting to the Breeder if his research works are periodically brought to light to refresh and enlighten the modern poultry breeders. Weekly publication thro' e-net work will help.

One of the greatest poultry men in history is no longer with us.
Zvi, your thoughts and predictions were almost like a prophet.
Zvi, when we were travelling on business tours in the eighties through the Netherlands, Belgium and France predicting the future of broiler meat production and even for layer eggs production on a commercial and profitable scale; we had great fun and I still caress it.
Multinational poultry organisations, making one breeder mistake after the other, hiding it as much as possible, denying,etc.but nature always tells the truth!,they never wanted to agree with this poultry genius Zvi.
Natural retarded growth through genes , accepting pour diets, diverting in strong health resistance,heat resistance, together with profitable growth are a phenomenon that you created,decades ago!!
Who was interested in the poultry industry, men only was looking for profitability, no flavour,breast meat was the answer of the blasting poultry Meat flavour, slow growing birds, less mortality, more hatching eggs and still be profitable are the slogans of Zvi.
A soldier as gone, look we all go, but Zvi was unique for the poultry business, he was a special one!
I pity
We wish Sara, his beloved wife and his son Joseph
and his family all the strength for this loss.
