“Current and future prospects of natural and organic poultry” was the title of a symposium in the 97th annual meeting of Poultry Science Association (PSA) in July 2008 in Niagara Falls, Canada. For this blog, I'd like to talk briefly about this subject which might be of interest to people in some parts of the world.

The organic food market especially organic poultry is growing very fast. Organic food presently accounts for about $17 billion in sales although it still constitutes a small portion of the total food sales. Chicken is the most widely available and most popular organic meat.

I personally do not consume organic products but I really like to know your opinions (especially if you are using these products) on the following questions:

I. Do you think that organic poultry products have more nutritive value than conventional ones?

II. How about safety of these products from microbial standpoint (especially Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp.)? Do you think that they are safer than conventional ones?

Hi..
I think it is related more to the taste of the meat of poultery than worthed attention should be paid to microbes content of it .

1- Yes I think and the taste is better

2- Organic poultries are not safer than conventional poultries; for Campylobacter it's more les safe because they live in open air, in the fields.

It is not a matter of nutritional value but the taste.
Nutritional value should be the same but since organic poultry is raised on natural products therefore its taste will be different.
eg the birds whic have green leaves in their died the yolke in their eggs will have marked yellow colour so the addition of natural products in their feed causes to change better taste than normally bred birds in poultry farms
2.
The birds reared on organic food will have to be kept for longer time and in their bodies God given immune system is allowed to develop therefore such problems are likely to be faced at lower scale than the poultry farms where birds are fed intensively to grow at faster speed

More nutritive value? May be. Sure organic poultry products are absolutely tastier (and take more care of animal welfare). Safer? I am eating organic products for thirty years, and had no problem with bacteria (only eat less chemicals & antibiotics).

There is no more safety in "organic" if it is grown and processed in a conventional manner. the only difference is in the diet source. True pastured is the only safe chicken.

Welfare? Ask that to birds subject to natural predation, or those that die due to diseases not seen in industrial facilites. They probably taste better, I don't know (and I don't care), in poorer countries these practices only raise the cost of what is supposed to be the cheapest form of animal protein, and ironically, the resistance to antibiotics is seen more frequently in upper classes than in those which consume more poultry products. A lot of people in Latin America are convinced that this thinking comes from countries whose needs are satisfied, and they are just looking for something else to occupy their minds. Personally, I consume chicken almost every day, I haven't suffered from any form of antibiotic resistance, ever. When I am ill, I go to see a doctor, I don't prescribe myself! I apologize for my aggressiveness, but these matters usually make me mad.

Organic poultry raised in the US under the NOP and processed in the same manner as traditional poultry have no taste or nutritional advantage. Poultry that is truly raised in true free-range (not just having access to the outside) have a significant taste and nutritional advantage - since the chickens are allowed to exercise their "chickeness," by exposure to sunlight, eating bugs, worms and grass. But, if they are processed in the traditional manner, the taste is compromised. Chlorine baths and irradiation degregate taste and, perhaps, nutritional values.

Yes, I think that the organic poultry products have more nutritive value than the conventional ones, but in lesser taste. And it is safer from microbial standpoint than conventional ones. But it will not so popular in the poorer countries because of its high price.

Nutritional value? Not sure but Yes! Organic Chicken taste more tastier.OCs are also safer as they have good resistance power to fight with microbes.
