Pilgrim’s Pride poultry producer cuts 500 jobs

//09 Feb 2009
Pilgrim's Pride has reported a wider first-quarter loss and will consequently cut an additional 505 positions at one of their production facilities.

The poultry processor will reduce capacity at its Live Oak, Fla., chicken processing plant, says Pilgrim's Pride spokesman Ray Atkinson, by eliminating the second shift. This plant employs approx. 1,400 workers.

During the first quarter, Pilgrim's Pride also cut 265 non-production jobs. It said it was considering further ways to reduce costs that could include eliminating more jobs, selling assets, idling facilities, consolidating operations, and relocating or reducing production.
