Poultry veterinarians celebrate 50 years

//22 Dec 2009
The World Veterinary Poultry Association (WVPA) recently held its XVIth congress in Marrakesh, Morocco and some 1,500 poultry veterinarians and poultry health scientists from some 85 countries attended.
They took part in an intensive scientific programme that was held over five days and attended various satellite symposia that were organised by Merial, SP Intervet and CEVA.

The social events had a real flavour of Moroccan cuisine and an abundance of local hospitality.

This congress also coincided with the 50th anniversary of WVPA and this was duly recognised at the gala dinner when the Moroccan Branch of WVPA surprised everyone with a birthday cake.

Achievement awards
At this congress Professors Janet Bradbury, Richard Jones (both from Liverpool University in the UK) and Professor Dr S Fathi Saad from Egypt received honorary life memberships of WVPA and Susan Baignent from UK received the Bart Rispens Research Award for the best paper published in the journal ‘Avian Pathology’.

“It was great to see so many poultry health professionals at one gathering”, said WVPA President, Professor Hafez M Hafez from Germany, “and our Moroccan colleagues organised a great conference for WVPA. We now look forward to the Mexican Branch achieving similar success with our next congress which will be held in Cancun, Mexico in August 2011”.

Membership of the WVPA is open to any poultry veterinarian or scientist and the Association has branches in almost 40 countries.

Anyone interested in WVPA can find more information from the Association’s website or from their secretary Ursula Heffels-Redmann
