USDA gives 5 mln for bird flu research

//04 Aug 2008
A US$5 mln grant from the USDA has been given to researchers at the University of Delaware, as well as 17 other institutions, to continue research and outreach programmes relating to bird flu.
These funds will be used to develop quicker and more effective ways to diagnose AI in poultry flocks living in the wild, in farms or private homes and in the poultry industry, according to Jack Gelb, director of the University of Delaware's Avian Biosciences Centre.
Researchers will be able to continue projects aimed at creating a continent-wide network to study the ecological and biological characteristics of AI, integrating research into an education programme available to a wide range of poultry producers and developing vaccines for mass immunization of birds.
