USDA to host first US-China agricultural symposium

//13 Feb 2012
US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced that government and industry leaders from the United States and China will gather in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday, Feb. 16, for the first US-China Agricultural Symposium.

Vilsack travelled to China for the second time as Agriculture Secretary in November to continue to strengthen bilateral trade relations and support the American brand of agriculture throughout the Asia Pacific region. During the visit, Vilsack and Chinese officials developed the US-China Agriculture Symposium as a key forum to expand their discussions into 2012 and beyond.

"I'm honoured to welcome China's Vice President Xi Jinping and Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu to the United States, where we may continue our in-depth dialogue on issues of mutual concern," said Vilsack. "Thanks to the productivity of American farmers, ranchers and producers, consumers in China recognise the United States as a reliable supplier of high-quality food and agricultural products. Strengthening our partnership with China's growing market is integral to the strength of the US economy in the decades ahead."

In 2011, China moved into the top spot as the number one market for US agricultural goods, purchasing $20 billion in US agricultural exports. The value of US farm exports to China supported more than 160,000 American jobs in 2011, on and off the farm across a variety of sectors.

Chinese officials will also visit Washington, DC, and California as part of their trip. The symposium will focus on current and future cooperation between the two nations in areas including food safety, food security and sustainable agriculture.

I agree with comments of MN Rao on the above subject. Just 15 days prior to declaration of bird flu in Bhubneswar,Odisha the hatching eggs and day old chicks might have been dispatched to different parts of country particularly North Eastern states from the high risk infected area. Then wht is the meaning of biosecurity and what will happen to those chicks? On the day of declartion (i.e on 04-02-2012) deadly Bird flu, Railway sports were being inaugurated by Honourable Governor of Odisha and event went on for three days just on the other side of compound wall of the said infected farm. Is it not dangerous for the participants who get exposure in highly contaminated area. More over, they have chosen to cull birds within 3km radius in which Governor House is also falling where many birds are kept. What happened to them instead they have chosen to kill the birds of OUAT research farm which is just away from the Governor House. The national high way which is few meters away from the, so called, high risk infected area is open as usual with heavy traffic exposing thousands of people during culling period. What precautionary measures were being taken in this regard ? Instead they have stopped all the activities of poultry business destroying their daily livelyhood without compensation. Culling operations are shown to public by allowing media people inside the poultry houses without any biosecurity measures. They have taken the video recordings and also some infected poultry dust along with them to their studios to distribute H5N1. In Odisha all these cases of bird flu are recorded only from back yard poultry and Government owned poultry farms thus revealing utter negligence in biosecurity.
