The job losses at the Grampian plant will be particularly devastating for the
area, which is mainly a rural area and very dependent on jobs in the food and
food processing industries.
Falling demand for poultry has led to the
processing plant cutting its staff of 420 by half. Grampian Country Food Group
said the cuts followed "poor trading conditions" for fresh
chicken.
Before the downturn in the market for fresh chicken there
were two shifts daily at the plant capable of processing more than 400,000 birds
in a week supplying the main supermarket chains.
Migrant agency
workers who work at the plant when needed have already been told they will lose
their jobs in July. Other redundancies will be phase in over the coming months,
the company said.
