Even on the traditional bird consumption market, large steps are being taken. Thai Tanoasree Traditional Chicken company raises and processes Thai native chickens under high quality circumstances. Ad Bal and Vincent ter Beek recently visited Tanoasree and report on their experiences.

The farm's production capacity is 100,000 day-old-chicks per week
Tanoasree Traditional Chicken is derived from a breeding effort to bring out
prominent characteristics from more than 20 native Thai chicken breeds
The company has GP stock, parent stock and an own hatchery
On the male side of the parent stock, traditional fighting roosters are used
Eggs produced at the breeder farm will be hatched in modern incubators
The farm is located in Kanchanaburi province, about 100 km east of Bangkok. It has
a production capacity of 30,000 chickens/week
Farms under contract growing programmes have a combined capacity of another
20,000 chickens/week
Chicks are reared under temperature controlled conditions, using brooders to
ensure adequate warmth for three to four weeks. After that, the birds will
be kept in regular houses for about 85-100 days until they reach
approximately 1.6 kg
Special feed formula rations, containing traditional Thai herbs, ensure good quality meat
The chicken processing plant is located in Nakhon Prathom province, at about
60 west of the Thai capital of Bangkok. Slaughter capacity is 1,000 chickens/hour
or 3,000 tonnes/year
Whole Tanoasree chicken as one of the products for sale in Thai supermarkets.
Based on research by the Thailand Research Fund, the Tanoasree traditional chicken contains less fat and cholesterol but more protein than other general broilers
